If you weren't using the ski poles uphill it would be a huge waste of time. I'd rather do pull ups, any day..
I thought about using ski poles once when I was a kid, and picked up a stick to see how it would be. Freakng sucked on flats. It would equate to a Olympic level athlete trying to gain strength lifting a women's running weight. For all that hassle I'd look for a used total gym. I love those things.. |

doing WHATEVER floats their boat to get out and exercise. That being said, I admit to being a purist when it comes to skating. I don't skate for the workout; that's the byproduct. Anything that interferes with that is viewed with derision. Ski poles are not welcome in most social skating settings. As I've stated, I really have no beef with folks doing whatever makes them happy, but I believe in engaging purely in the activity you're doing and not trying to add stuff to it to make it more. If you're skating hard enough and doing it well, you use your arms plenty. If you're training for skiing, by all means as stated above. There is nothing wrong with recumbents. If you want to get one, have at it and enjoy yourself regardless of others feelings on it. There are those who see them as kind of a step away from the gusto of cycling and they're generally not so welcome on serious group rides. Yeah, they're kinda goofy looking and I don't believe I've ever seen one mountain biking, though I have no doubt someone somewhere has done it. For me personally, recumbents represent a resignation from the aggression and gung ho attitude that's at the heart of cycling. That's just me and deep down inside I really don't spend too much time (zero) thinking about it aside from an occasional razzing on the internet. I've heard folks say they can't ride a regular bike because of their backs or weight or some such thing and that's fine, whatever gets you out of the house is great. edit: I got logged out before I posted this and in the meantime I watched the vid. Funny and pretty exemplary of the common sentiment in the cycling community. I forgot to mention the climbing thing. Jim, why the recumbent instead of a real road bike? |

If you have small children...how about pushing a stroller while you skate? That would work your upper body.

It's a bit cold now, but come summertime you could do Stand Up Paddle-boarding (SUP). It's a great core workout that including the arms, chest and legs. You can often find local classes for $50 for 1.5 hrs. |

You said he should just put on his skates and get some poles, not the same as training. |

Maybe useful as a weapon to smash someone up with for running you off the road with their car.... If your skating hard enough (like speedy said) you'll get good core work done. Slaloms , spins, or even hard turns and crossovers. |

Pull-ups, chin-ups and push-ups. Needed, one chin-up bar, a floor and 30 minutes a day. It's only difficult until one gets use to it. Next planks!

Streamline is spot on!
I've totally given up on weights, and the thought of skating with ski poles makes me cringe. I would literally kill myself with one of those things..... Pull ups are an amazing work out. So are pushups. I'm ate up with both. Between them, and the aggressive bowl skating I do, the only reason I need the gym is for the shower and the jacuzzi. (and the pullup bar, and the inclement weather days.....lol) During the past two days of bad weather, I've done pullups two days in a row for a total of just shy of 200. When I skate the bowls, I worked in a pushup routine at the end of one of my runs. I usually do somewhere between 100 and 200 daily. Getting your body moving thru space, be it pullups, pushups, situps, wallups, skating, leaping, squatting is the best type of exercise do in fact that they workout the abductor muscles too. Incorporating these excruciatingly boring and challenging (pullups) routines into a fun setting is the key to sticking with it. I'm currently looking for a very tall ladder somewhere. Might even start rock climbing.

Not to nit pick to much but, I see a lot of "pullups chinups pushups" etc. Just wondering when they became "sports"?
I know them as great training for sports but haven't seen them as stand alone "sports" The OP ask for sports for the upper body not just a work out. As much as I don't care for them, ski poles as used for cross country training might fit, but this time of year real cross country skiing or Nordic skiing would be a great workout. As would rowing or paddle boarding but they fit better in the summer. Basket ball can give a good whole body workout, not as much arm as you might want but some. Tennis gets you moving and using some arm too but as with B ball you get better results doing the training work first. |

The great thing about skating is that it doesn't feel like a workout because it's so much fun. There just isn't an equivalent for upper body, other than rowing and swimming, that I can see.
What's the difference between a chin-up and a pull-up?

Vertical Gymnastics may become an Olympic sport. More legitimate than roller sports? (Pokes coals of ire...)

Vertical gymnastics..... Those gals are kill ya dead strong! Amazing strength from some obviously gifted athletes. Fun to watch too!
![]() I have a sport nature to my pullups. I like doing timed trials. My best feat yet was 100 pullups in 10m:53s. I almost beat the sub 10minute mark. Then 10 months ago I crashed at the skatepark trying to learn backflips and fubard the shnot outta my shoulder. I'm still trying to get back to where I was a year ago. Then there are the animals at barstarzz.com: http://youtu.be/PKfOuHJ_EXA This one has got over 8million views! http://youtu.be/j3MTqRWPiZU So, it's actually a spectator sport as well. There's a dude on the internet that ripped off 100 pullups consecutively! Lets not even get started with Jack ... ![]() If I ever decide to rock climb, I'm ready! (definately a sport)
