I love to skate ! infact I visited our local rink so much that I got a job so I could save on the cost of my family going 5+ times a week my only complain is the snack bar food is really bad , not as in taste but I'm talking high fat, sodium, carbs., etc. since I work there and the rule is no outside food or drinks...
I thought I'd suggest some healthier options after all skating is good for you why ruin it with a 400 calorie soda and a 24 gram of fat all beef hot dog. so could you guys throw me some suggestions what health snacks do you like? or would you like served at a snack bar? |

what a great observation!
I'd suggest fresh fruit and nuts and juices and a bunch of other stuff that nobody wants. Okay, maybe the juices would sell. Maybe some whole bran muffins. Milk. (CHoco milk for speedy). Cookies and llots of them for Jessica. The best you could hope for, imo, is to add SOME healthy snacks to the other crap that sells. These guys are really hurting for income, and they have got to put what people want out there. Very low margins, as they say. |

smoothies! smoothies are great. they sell at shopping malls for goodness sake, must be palatable to the masses and can be made healthy and for profit.
granola bars. yogurt covered nuts and raisins. - more of a long shot. and i second the pop corn. |

I always have two humus sandwiches on a french baguette, with sliced roma tomatoes and swiss cheese, washed down with a protein shake, a smoothie, or maybe a chilled, tasty recovery drink.
Oh, but that's outdoor skating. They don't allow that in the rink, do they? SORRY! (LOL). maybe the problem is where you're choosong to skate? edit: just kidding with you- cool that you found something you love to do, and i hope you're successful in bringing them around to your way of thinking. for my dedication to outdoor skating, i find myself making a lot of unsavory sacrifices that are none too appealing, but there all well worth it if it's what you or i want to do. If all else fails, drink a recovery drink after your skate workout so you get some nutrients into you if nothing else. Don't eat the junk they serve up, imo. We ALWAYS get our pasta on before skating. I let the kids eat popcorn while they're there, and they like it without butter....luckily, both of them hate soda, so it's the water fountain to drink.

I bet you they even have doors on the restroom stalls. Fancy, Fancy... The water fountain at our local rink has been broken for at least 3 years, and I don't remember ever seeing doors on the restroom stalls. I'd rather play in traffic, but unfortunatly the kids have to skate somewhere.

Don't know how good for you they are, but the kids at the rink love 'em. Myself, I'm not touching them... Rg |

im going to go with some good things we could eat that maybe the owner of your rink could find appealing ie. cheap and profitable. popcorn, trail mix or granola bars, smoothies... goodluck in getting any of these. most of the rink owners i have come across arent there to take suggestions. the few i have met are a$$holes about it too. so, i try to eat before i go. but i will leave a bottle of aquafina and a powerbar in the car. if i must i will go outside for a few minutes to my car and snarf.

I'm thinking that anything OTHER than the 'usual crap' would be good. Just remember though, whatever the suggestions are, they're more likely to be accepted if they're easy to add to the menu without the need for expensive equipment and training for the people behind the counter. Powerbars, trailmix, bottled water, maybe those little packets of koolaid or whatever (add one little packet to a bottle of water and shake), some fresh fruits, bagels...you would think that they'd be simple enough to incorporate into the existing menu without costing a lot during the trial phase.

I guess I'll go against the grain here. I wish they had fresh fruit, smoothies, hummus and baby carrots, pastahios, roasted endamame, spicy pumpkin seeds, cocoa dusted almonds, lol, oven baked yams, etc. Oh yeah, how about fresh squeezed lemonade and OJ too? OK, I like the good ol healthy foods! But honestly, I skate until my legs fall off and rarely stop to even pee. When I'm done, I eat the stash in my car. And I load up in the car ride there, usually a thick, rich chocolate protein shake and fruit, 2 hours after breakfast on the weekends too. Once I hit the rink, I'm too full and having too much fun to think about food nor care.
I think they have a water fountain......I guess I SHOULD stop for that.

frozen yogurt pops, trail mix or trail bars, low-cal soda and mineral waters with light fruit tastes. Ummm low calorie string cheese, soups, low calorie chips, 100 calorie cookie and snack pkgs. I will try to think of some other ideas...never know I may not be a pastskater!

Granola bars are a great idea. How about individual bags of raisins or nuts? Healthy, don't go stale quickly and kids like 'em. Fruit roll-ups? Yoghurt?

real food at a roller rink????? that's crazy! hahaha. it's lucky the teen-age employees can serve pizza and soda. i'm pretty lucky though; where i skate it is possible to special order a veggie pizza, but for the most part, i'm with roller dudette-- eat before you skate.
the best alternative is to ask the manager to stock energy bars and trail mix in the vending machine. but i suppose that the fact that i'm in california makes these things are pretty normal for us, but i'm not above getting a snickers bar every so often! yum! |
