$180 is for one pair boots.
You can even buy a pair of speed skate boots at $50 in China, or a speed skate package under $100.

This kind of stuff happened in the RC industry a few years back and guess what happened. The Chinese stuff got better and is now considered hobby grade equipment! Their speed controls, motors and other products are just as good as any other countries stuff. They may be bad copies today, but you never know what will happen in the future. This is especially true since some of the major skate companies are having the "good" stuff made in China already where intellectual property laws pretty much don't exist. This stuff isn't rocket science and it wouldn't take long to make very good copies of it.

I do have a feeling that some of the stuff on that site are actually over-runs of the production equipment being sold off, it's just difficult to tell which is which. On the down side, while they may be able to simply churn out more stock than ordered and simply keep making them to the original design, nothing says that they'll use the same materials.

That's what brand names do for us. A company builds a decent product and makes a name for themselves and the population can start to trust that brand will make decent stuff. In China, there's no restrictions on putting someone else's name on a product.

In the hobby market, people just get annoyed with the shoddy stuff, so they eventually steer towards recognizable names. Eventually some Chinese brands can wade through that to make some decent gear.

But... in inline equipment, shoddy equipment can lead to injuries. People are less prone to accepting possible failures. (Plus everyone seems to think they need world class equipment when they're not world class skaters.) So I don't quite imagine it working out the same way.

Probably not. Even the site looks and functions like a Ebay knockoff! It's not as if we don't have screw balls posting stuff there at moronic prices. Or showing pix of some expensive consumer electronics product in the box titled "_ (whatever it is) _ BOX", to unsuspecting idiots who end up buying "just the box" for maybe 15% less then the cost of the actual NIB product!

But hey, if you don't wanna spend $286.55 on a z frame worth $6.55, you could spend US $2,365.70 /piece for the Rollerblade GTR which already includes a frame wheels and bearings

Could happen on the real thing too! There were a couple batches that the hubs were not built correctly and they would come apart where they were welded together.

The people making these skates don't skate so they don't know that if you make the carbon 1cm too high in one area that it will be excruciatingly painful for the skater. So these boots are very painful. I put a few pairs on at trade shows and I could not stand up in them. They use dress shoe lasts rather than ones made for speed skating because you can not buy an off the shelf speed skate last, you need to make them yourself. There is no anti rip material between the liner and the outer skin where the eyelets go so the eyelets rip out. All important nuts and screws that need to be hardened to make sure that they do not strip have not been hardened. They use toxic glues. All the wheels have different rebounds from the same pack. Inline frame axles do not line up so the wheels don't spin properly and they are way too soft so they will strip. The list goes on and on as to why you should avoid any skate product from alibaba, taobao or ali express. If you are looking to buy genuine products in China, try T-Mall (http://www.tmall.com/). Tmall is also run by alibaba, but companies must register and prove that they own the IP in order to sell.

It is illegal to make these fake products in China and the penalties are harsh if they are caught.

What sux for the sport is that people will buy these skates, have a bad experience and give up skating.
