I come from the world of derby, where my mix of 88a and 92a were great for grip and some speed. Now that I've transitioned to speed skating, I'm finding anything above 92a slides on the corners at the skate rink. I hear nationals are skated on a nice wood floor.
I guess my question is this: Should I get a less grippy wheel like the Acid Reign or Purple Reigns if I really want to be competitive at nationals?

From past experience, Nationals and Regionals all have really nice tight floors with fresh roll-on. I'd roll 97A up to 101A's. Of course, those are only good on tight floors. If you never get to skate on floors like that, well can you say "slide"

You should never have been using 88A's mixed with 92A's in the first place. Get your skates dialed in, and find some 97A plus wheels and you should be good. If people can skate 97A's on a Derby track, then there is no excuse for running anything softer on a speed track.

Love them. At 2011 Quad Nationals, my teammate and I won first and second, respectively, on Purple Reigns. It was a photo finish, and also a new national record for our division. These wheels rock. 'Nuff said.

Why is having a mix like that bad? I get enough grip that I don't slide on the corners, yet I don't have to try too hard to go fast. This is in derby though.

How much wheel grip you need at max speed in corners not only relates to the floor, but also to how well both you and the skate's suspension are able to keep all four wheels down and your weight evenly distributed between them.
Some of this relates to plate design and suspension setup tweaking, and a much is determined by the skater's own skill s set. However, if you roll with a too-stiff suspension setup, you cannot easily learn the skills needed to finesse the plates in the right ways to hold the wheels at the optimum position for maximum traction on the turns. So, softer wheels really only hide the other problems. Get the suspension tweaked for maximum freedom of action. Get your stroke out wide without the outer wheels coming up off the floor. Then see how firm you can go before your wheels start to slip. -Armadillo

Have to disagree. Really depends on the track. Sometimes you just do need to go down to a 92A. I run Scotts 92A's on most speed tracks as I love having total grip. But having said that if I do run harder and they work all the better.

It creates a crutch! learn how to skate good wheels, and give the not as good wheels the flick.
