First month worth reporting since the crash in September. 175.81 miles is unimpressive by my historic standard but it stomps all over the three months that preceded. And most of those miles are SKATING! I finished 2019 with a slow and stiff 1.25 mile roll around the block. I followed up four days later with a more steady 7 miler. Eight days later, I made it out to Canada Road for 21 miles. The Wednesday that followed was my return to the Wednesday Night Skate. Tomorrow I intend a full 44 mile Canada Road workout. Back stiffness and strain is still a problem. Not only does it make for a more difficult and less comfortable workout, it reduces my stability. At this point in my recovery, I can not afford to fall. With practice and physical therapy, this problem is subsiding but I'm not done yet. I have resumed my Sunday workouts and the Wednesday Night Skate but I need to be solid before I mix with cars in my commute or the terrain and crowd variability of the San Francisco Friday Night Skate. For the latter, my goal is Valentine's Day. We'll see. |

YAY!
Great to have you back! I have settled into a new routine mostly thanks to my new job (May 2019) that is quite demanding physically, AND starts at 7a.m. which robs me of the coolest 3 morning hours. So.... I have pledged 5 miles per day when I skate. I will commute rain or shine - except lightning and flooded roads. It will be a rare day when i skate much more than a 1/2 marathon. This pledge got me 250 miles last month which is good enough. My true goal is to go low and steady avoiding all overuse injuries in theory. My basic commute gets me those 5 miles. More is gravy. On the rare occasion I get to the local Rail-Trail (50 miles away by car) i intend to limit my miles to a full marathon. Sometimes Less is More. That's what I am shooting for this year. Today I skated my 29th consecutive day. No health issues.

![]() And the climb continues through a parched February. My back was just a little too squirely so I pushed it off another two weeks. The was the second delay. The original goal with Groundhog Day. I did make it on Leap Day eve (yesterday). The back was mostly well behaved but my paranoia was at 11. I am essentially under doctor's orders not to fall. The unexpected chill also reduced my enjoyment but it was still a good night. I also, finally, managed a full 5-lap, 44 mile workout on Canada Road. Much of the problem was getting out there on time due to the PT load. Next activity to restart is commuting on skates. But I can't do that quite yet. It isn't so much that my body can't handle it much as it is a time problem. I have a mountain of physical therapy exercises to do each day both for the back and the wrist. Getting to work at proper time in the morning at getting to bed a proper time at night is next to impossible without cheating something. I have negative time available for the skate commute. The wrist PT ends at about the equinox and I think the back will too. I am really looking forward to that day. Mileage for February exceeded the fateful September when it all went wrong. So the climb out has finally exceeded the decent. 228 miles is still well short of my "normal" 400-500 miles, though. For *that*, I need to resume the commute. And that won't happen soon enough in March to meet the mark. It may not happen in March at all. There are other factors going on. If I manage to land a better job, as I've been trying to do for far too long, the commute will probably delayed well into April. |

My second best month in 18 months, only beaten by last month (January 2020)
Also I am nearing 50 days of skating in a row starting last January. Commuting has been my mainstay, although it is only 2 miles each way taking the scenic route or 1.3 miles most directly. Hopefully the weather holds up through Spring so I can squeeze in some longer sessions. Looks like I am finally adjusting to the new job resetting my biological clock by 3 hours a.m. and p.m. I have decided to shoot for many half-marathons and fill the gaps with 5-mile sessions so as to avoid overuse injuries. For me, to skate AND have a life, 200+ miles a month is doable, weather permitting. I have been skating in the rain for commuting but not going out in a flood or lightening. My split between inline/quad skates and longboards was near even at 100 each this month. That is a rarity and likely caused by the 50 days of commuting on a board, then weekends on skates doubling or tripling my weekday board totals. ![]() ![]()

That's impressive. In my better days (which haven't returned yet) I always try to have one day/week where I did not skate. I guess it is an alternative view on your "less is more" principle. With kind of miles I usually rack up, I risk overtraining if I don't take a break every now and then.

It did start out that way. A couple of good Wednesday Night Skates and solid Canada Road Sundays. I was set for for a second Friday Night Skate and thought I might be within a week or two of resuming my skate commute. And then, out of nowhere, all that was swept away. On a very very benign part of the Wednesday Night Skate I fell for no reason at all and end up breaking several ribs and my clavicle. I end up in the hospital for 2.5 days. Two days after my discharge, the Shelter in Place order was issued. Last night, that order was extended to the end of May. I don't know what I'm gong to record for April. Between injury and the pandemic, it could very well be a fat zero. Just like the last two weeks. I will replicate this posting on SkateDebate.com Last edited by ese002; April 1st, 2020 at 02:45 AM. 90mi Skateboarding
56mi Roller Skating Then C-19 encouraged me NOT to end up in any medial facility. Quit skating, furloughed from work under perfect weather for skating - torture! Working from home, cash still coming in thankfully. So I won't starve. So the rest of March: 16mi Fitness Walking 63mi Cycling ------------------ 224 Total Miles all sports I did accomplish 66 days of skating IN A ROW! By far the longest skate streak ever. Sadly, without the virus I could be hitting 80 days soon as the weather has been amazing. ![]() And March: ![]() No clue what April brings. Not sure why images aren't showing up but a right-click and select View Image will show them.

I am not optimistic about May. My body is healing but skating seems premature. Still can't ride a bike. The scooter is stuck at the office. The local trails are just too sketchy social distance wise. |

I made it to 66 skating days in a row before the lockdown. Decided not to skate outdoors at all while the local ERs were jammed with plague victims. Switched back to cycling along with some power walking with my wife. Last 2 weeks of April I started some skate dance lessons inside the house using YouTube. Very challenging and much more physically demanding that I would have thought.
So the breakdown: Skating: 14hrs:15min - all dance practice indoors on quads. Cycling: 287 miles of local stuff, never more than 15 miles from the house. ALL STREET! Fitness paths are now loaded with infected zombies but streets are deserted. So...back on my old road routes. Power Walking: 19 miles April, 16 miles March. I can't see any changes for May really. Falling in love with my touring bike again that's for sure. Not certain how/where I will get back to skating without the fitness paths plus my entire neighborhood is under construction for long needed street repairs/resurfacing - which will be AWESOME at some point. Just not May 2020.

Had a good April. A personal record 171 miles on the Powerslide Swell Firefly 125's. Up from 122 in March. Let's see what May brings!

239 miles for May. Mostly cycling, some skating, some walking. Now that I am back at work the miles will drop no doubt. BUT....
Since I added cycling and walking to Endomondo it has become known to me that I have not missed EVEN ONE DAY of exercise. Every day on the 2020 Endomondo calendar has an entry. This is a first for me. January 1 to June 1 without any missed days. Booyah!

I'm hoping that, in June I can do something interesting enough to record on the Garmin. It won't happen immediately, though. Cycling is still out because the tail bone. Getting the scooter will require a compelling business reason to go the office. Skates, I have, but I want to see results of a bone density scan first. That was supposed to be today but it has been delayed until Thursday and I may not see the results in Monday. At any rate, I also think I need be free of even transient pain from the ribs and spine before I put wheels on my feet. I'm not there yet. Skatelog is supposed to shutdown sometime this month so this would seem to be my last update here. I wish it were more positive but that's just the way it is. With July rolls in, I will setup a new thread of SkateDebate.com unless someone else gets there first. |
