*Thanks* for your kind words! I will have to word the thread title a little more careful when I am - yet again - looking for other old bats on wheels!
Elitism is prevalent amongst skaters - I wish there was more unity. But since I am no Tony Hawk (he was/is a very good skateboarder - I am a bad skater! ) there better is no publicity around me!

Totally agree! Lets bring the old man/woman stench to every skate park!!!! (Er..... you don't qualify for that just yet....... your kids are wayyyy tooooo young!! *Darn* Anybody here who could support me in spreading the specific odour?? )

But I must say that 99.9% of youngsters who skate our local skate park are very supportive and I find myself treated as a fellow skater rather than someone who is likely to be older than their own parents. And a lot of them have said that they wished their parents would pick up the sport! For me in turn youngsters nowadays are not alien - they are just as we were! Young... loving life ... having fun!

Every now and then "strangers" skate in our skate park - at the weekend there was some french bloke who laced incredible tricks in the bowl. He was really nice and made a bit of space for me to skate - and chatted to me for ages.
Another guy came from Guernsey - he had to do a double take, when he saw me in the bowl. But he also chatted to me for ages.
I think we geezers are well supported by the youngsters - it is only a few who resent us.

I'm 45. Will I do?

And I have to say, most skaters around Austin support what I do as well. It is usually when I go to a skateboard dominated park in a big city that I find derision from them.

Gery is a few month older than me if I remember correctly. I am nowhere near 60! (yet)

He can skate that darned contraption - I break out in cold sweat just thinking about dropping in there!

This rollernews article says he is 60, and it was written in 2006. I think someone might be fudging their age just a wee bit! Are you sure you aren't 29, Briggite? :P

( did I spell your name right? Or is it Brigitte? )

Who would have guessed that a journalist would sensationalize (exaggerate) the news for a better story!?!?

Lol!!

Yeah, Gerry is definitely leagues above me! And he has packed away injuries which would seriously cause problems with my job! (He, too, has family and still seems to support it!!! )

A lot of people say that he is where he is due to age and appearance. Perhaps he is, but he is also a good skater and loves the sport.
What pisses a lot of people off is that the headlines are always long the lines 'fly Grandpa, fly' (Bild Zeitung) rather than the sport itself.

I wish him many years of skating! (and myself, of course! )

Right now I am working on this soul to switch top soul..... so far so disastrously. On Thursday there is more practising and bruises!

You gotta expect that with his big wooly beard, though it does suck that articles are not based on skill.
