YAY on being healthy! That's awesome!

Panera used to have this awesome bistro steak salad, then discontinued it a few weeks after I got hooked. Now they have a wonderful yummy Fuji apple salad thing that's to die for. I eat two a week at least.

Default Quotes from famous Vegetarians

Quote:
“Is it not a reproach that man is a carnivorous animal? True, he can and does live, in a great measure, by preying on other animals; but this is a miserable way--as any one who will go to snaring rabbits, or slaughtering lambs, may learn--and he will be regarded as a benefactor of his race who shall teach man to confine himself to a more innocent and wholesome diet. What my own practice may be, I have no doubt that it is a part of the destiny of the human race, in its gradual improvement, to leave off eating animals, as surely as the savage tribes have left off eating each other when they came in contact with the more civilized.”
Henry David Thoreau in “Walden”

Quote:
“I do feel that spiritual progress does demand at some stage that we should cease to kill our fellow creatures for the satisfaction of our bodily wants.”
Mahatma Gandhi
Quote:
“It is my view that the vegetarian manner of living, by its purely physical effect on the human temperament, would most beneficially influence the lot of mankind.”
Albert Einstein
Quote:
“As long as men massacre animals, they will kill each other. Indeed, he who sows the seeds of murder and pain cannot reap joy and love.”
Pythagorus

Quote:
“It is necessary to correct the error that vegetarianism has made us weak in mind, or passive or inert in action. I do not regard flesh-food as necessary at any stage”
Mahatma Gandhi

Quote:
“Nonviolence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all living beings, we are all savages.”
Thomas Edison, inventor

Quote:
“When a man wants to murder a tiger, he calls it sport; when a tiger wants to murder him, he calls it ferocity.”
George Bernard Shaw

Quote:
“Truly man is the king of beasts, for his brutality exceeds them. We live by the death of others. We are burial places! I have since an early age abjured the use of meat...”
Leonardo da Vinci, painter, sculptor, poet.

Quote:
“A dead cow or sheep lying in a pasture is recognized as carrion. The same sort of carcass dressed and hung up in a butcher’s stall passes as food!”
J. H. Kellog

Quote:
“I do not see any reason why animals should be slaughtered to serve as human diet when there are so many substitutes. After all, man can live without meat...”
The Dalai Lama

Quote:
“He who does not value life does not deserve it.”
Leonardo da Vinci

Quote:
“I hold flesh-food to be unsuited to our species. We err in copying the lower animal world if we are superior to it.”
Mahatma Gandhi

Quote:
“I look my age. It is the other people who look older than they are. What can you expect from people who eat corpses?”
George Bernard Shaw, great English playwright

Default Pythagorus

Hi Drella,

Just one note in this particular Off-Topic Universe

Believe you or your sources are wrong about Pythagorus. You have to understand his times to understand the possibilities. I guess he couldn't eat plants either since they were part of the life process.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pythagoras

This "quoting from the ancients" often happens with those who have an agenda and wish to find historical roots. I remember well the argument by the anti-GOD community about Jesus being a black man to move others against GOD beliefs.

Advanced age doesn't merit wisdom, just brings you closer to death.

Default In response to a response.

Firstly, so no one here thinks that I merely trashed skating Dave unfairly, let me explain a few things first.

I simply posted quotes from many famous-type vegetarians. Now Dave here decided to take issue with just one of my quotes.

He said;
Quote:
"To better understand Pythagoras, I need first understand the time in which this quote was being spoken."
Sounds fair enough, right? Well no.

Then Dave here, goes on and posts a link. A Wiki-link no less, then backs away as if he just led me to some infallible critique on the life of this great philosopher.

Now nowhere did he guide me as to a starting point --to better comprehend his obviously cryptic purport.

Then to top it off, he insults me within his cute little signature- he’s so fond of. As if he, the object thinker, is indeed the contumelious victor.

That’s not how to play nice now is it?.......

So less anyone think I was out of line with my comments in response to his apparent heckling, now you may see where it is I’m coming from… You dig?

No need to be insulting to one another.......

My husband and I were just commenting the other night over a salad that it seems we only eat meat occasionally anymore.
Used to be we'd have chicken or pork or beef every other night with dinner.
We stopped eating beef about 5 years ago, but we still eat other meat.
However, now we only eat meat maybe 3 times a week and that includes the times we have a tuna salad for lunch or a couple slices of salami in a sandwich. Few meat-based dinners anymore.
So, though we are not vegetarians, our meat consumption is about half of what it was about five years ago. Just an evolving lifestyle I guess.

Regardless of Jesus' skin color , -was he a vegetarian, I wonder? I'm sure Buddha and Mohammed were, right?

Of course he was.

Wasn't he who taught "Thou shall not kill?"...

Of course Jesus would've been smart enough to include ALL living beings in his teachings. After all, he is the anointed one....

I always thought that was God, and Moses got the assist on the play. I might be wrong - it's been a while since I looked at the box score.

Wasn't Jesus that barefoot hippie who kept sneaking wine into parties where peeps thought they were just drinking water?

“He who does not value life does not deserve it.”

That doesn't actually equate to being a vegeterian.

For anybody who watches UK TV - River Cottage - Hugh Fernely Wittingstall

The principle applies to whom ever is teaching it. Just as 2+2=4 no matter who gives it's formula.
Christ was simply representing the teachings of His predecessors, not concocting new theology.

I think you have Him confused with Terrence McKenna. And that wasn't wine- but ayahuasca.....

No, but it is the beginning to understanding life's basic principle. And, vegetarianism just happens to be it's common denominator.
