98.8 miles for August according to my last GPS standing. Had a handful of unofficial miles as well so well above 100. Also broke 1000 for the year of RECORDED miles. As I mentioned in my last post, I am getting less concerned with the count knowing my GPS will fail very soon and likely not replace it anytime soon.
Weather is starting to break. I skated every day last week of August and first week of September looks to be rain free. At....LAST! So tired of the heat AND storms.

This was mostly due to Rollin' on the River. I usual Sunday workouts are longer, sometimes much longer than a Marathon so most races actually reduce my mileage. Race performance was also a bit off but that was a Murphy's Law sort of thing. Details in the race report which I will post soon. It is pretty much done but I'm hoping for a good cover photo and I have seen very few photos from the race at all. I also missed one commute due to an early meeting at work related to a reorg. Work turmoil has been a major distraction this year. I skated 80 miles yesterday in a workout that was more gruelling that I expected. But that will be in the September update. |

I had two of them The new one won't hold a charge so I pretty much have to make certain to charge it just before I use it making afternoon workouts interesting challenges. Also this GPS was a watch and the whole case is cracking (plastic) and the band is broken off. Fixed this by grinding all of the band attachments off and using Velcro (R) to my wristguard instead.
The old GPS took FOREVER to link up with satellites. Most days I would finish my entire commute before it found even one satellite. It does not like finding satellites once I am moving and I ain't standing in the sun for 20 minutes waiting on it. So finally I just spiked the thing on the tarmac and shattered it, which was the most gratifying thing I did that week. When the remaining GPS dies I likely will not replace it. My mileage is very pedestrian these days anyway. The new job is great but much more physical and in the weather all day so getting MORE heatstroke after work is often not attractive. Today was 104°F when work let out at 3:30 p.m. for instance. Yet I still managed 10.4 miles in three sessions: 2.4 to work, 2.3 lunch skate, and then added a few laps in the park to get my 10 on the way home.

Is the problem that it doesn't hold a charge or that isn't charging reliably? My current Garmin 920 is finicky about making contact with the charger. I have to do a simple cleaning of the contacts almost daily. If I don't, I will go to grab the watch in the morning and find that, instead of charging overnight, it has discharged during the night. The 305 was worse. The contact problem was inside the watch made worse by failing glue. Last edited by ese002; September 4th, 2019 at 03:33 AM. Reason: typo |

It was hot, though, and I my electrolytes went to a bad place and I perseverated and it did get a little better. I think I just caught a pathological condition and didn't pick up on the warning signs soon enough. The sodium active transport requires glucose to fuel it. If I started the sucking in Gu earlier it would not have been an issue. It's a tough lesson to learn but understating is always useful. The following weekend was more on target as I tapered before my 10th showing at the Northshore Inline Marathon. Alas, I had barely begun the main event, when It all went to Hell. I haven't skated or done anything else of significance since. I managed to walk 1.2 miles today. That was actually more than I thought I could. There will be no update for October and November probably won't be worth posting about either. I may start hiking again in late November but I don't expect to be able to skate until December. Even that will require optimistic interpretation of doctor's orders. Injury sucks. Last edited by ese002; September 30th, 2019 at 04:16 AM. Reason: Left out grand totals |

169 miles for September 2019. Skated 20 days often 3 sessions - AM, PM commute and a lunch session. Average is 8.45 miles a day. Second best month total since June of 2018. I credit ZERO rain past 30 days for these numbers.
Also, no injuries. Everything seems to be 100% thanks to those little bites at a time instead of a few big mile days. Shortest day was 1.9 and longest was 14. I'm happy.

64.27 miles for October. That is no typo. I work in a park where a huge festival (Voodoo Fest) is held every October around Halloween. They ruin my route to work for about 5 weeks, either with fences during setup and the event, or mud all over the roads/trails until the rain washes it off eventually. So....
I did get a new acquisition in October and for a preview I took it out for a 20 mile session on a local Rail-Trail yesterday, which counts toward my November total, which will also be pathetic thanks to the mud I mention and early darkness. Anyway, here is a sneak peak: ![]() ![]()

How do you like pushing the stroller? I've only pushed one once: I pushed the "Porta Party" up a hill on the San Francisco Friday Night Skate. Maybe it was my height combined with the stroller not being adjusted for me, but I found it difficult to skate naturally or efficiently behind one.
As expected, I didn't skate at all in October. I have 28 miles of *walking* recorded. Mostly recorded because I lost my watch at the hospital in Minnesota. I've been using the Garmin as a watch since then so it is always there. November may actually be less. Perversely, I was walking more in the early, more painful weeks. My left arm in the cast meant I could not reasonably drive. Taking Lyft everywhere gets expensive so I had to walk a lot to catch buses and trains. Now that I can drive, I only walk significantly on weekends. If I can start hiking again around the middle of the month, I may be able to reverse this trend. |

It's not that *that* risky. I've been regularly participating in races and night skates for 20 years. I've been "taken out" twice and the first time was just minor tailbone bruising. I've hit the ground for randomness or my own clumsiness too many times to count.

Worst month this year. 52.69 miles total skates and skateboards.
Excuses: 1. Voodoo Fest. My new job puts me right next to a double loop bike path that takes me about 20 minutes to complete, so at lunch I can usually get that 20 minutes (2 miles) at the very least. However, a yearly festival called Voodoo Fest every Halloween takes over both areas. Setup takes about 2 weeks and cleanup takes over a month. Puts my lunch skate sessions out of business. 2. Road Construction. My commute route was cutoff by serious road construction that required me to take a detour that was not skate worthy. Thankfully there was an overlap with Voodoo Fest so I didn't get thwarted at two different times. Now the construction is complete with bike lanes on both sides - an actual enhancement for skating to work - and perfect smooth tarmac at what was previously the worst part of my commute. So a net positive for the foreseeable future. 3. Weather. Rain and early darkness wrecked my weekend sessions. 4. Illness. My wife had to be hospitalized the last 4 days of November just when I changed to the evening shift at work so I could get more daylight opportunities for skating. Her stay cost me FOUR perfect weather skate days. She is home now and improving so I am thankful. Diverticulitis - welcome to old age. Positives: For the entirety of December I will be working roughly 3PM-12PM with 2 days off every week. I have access to a car one of those days and typically December gives me many glorious mild weather days. So I might go out of 2019 with a BANGUP bunch of miles. My lunch sessions are done for the month due to darkness but I should get many longer sessions. Road construction is complete and the Voodoo Fest track is still filthy with dried mud but skateable with due caution. I am currently at 1397 miles for the year and hope to AT LEAST break 1500. This seems likely but man, I hate to get my hopes up. Also, due to no skating there has been no crashing or overuse injuries. So...I am all healed and as perfect as I get going into the 12th month. Managed 12 miles today and Wednesday I hope to get 20-30. A good start if it holds up. My new trailer is THE BOMB! Perfect. Inspiration and a Sherpa to warm clothing, extra socks and plenty of hot or cold beverages for longer skates on the local 60 mile Rail-Trail. Maybe get one 50 miler this month if all goes well. ![]()

I'm still in the back brace so skating is clearly out. My tail bone is still a wreck so the bike is also useless. My skate total for the year currently stands 3,259.70 miles. It probably won't change. If the checkup next week goes well next, I hope to be easing out of the back brace. But it is going to take a while to rebuild my core enough that I can skate. Add in Christmas and the rain and I honestly don't expect to be back on wheels before the new year. |

I chose a slot machine graphic to celebrate my 2019 skate total because my year was more of a game of chance than any sort of organized workout effort. Crazy weather, new job, THREE dead GPS devices, fair number of injuries, and of course laziness at times. The breakdown is 1000 miles on the new quad skates and 500 on my longboards (2). IT'S A WRAP!
Happy 2020! ![]()

Activities 24
Total Distance 39.86 mi Max Distance 6.45 mi Total Activity Time 11:08:03 h:m:s Activity Calories 3,328 C Average Speed 3.6 mph Max Speed 17.2 mph Average Heart Rate 133 bpm Max Heart Rate 172 bpm December was even more dismal than October, largely due to the holiday travel. But it was more diverse. Most was still walking but I recorded a couple of swims for the first time ever. But this tiny contribution is what I am most proud of: Activities 1 Total Distance 1.27 mi Max Distance 1.27 mi Total Activity Time 12:17 h:m:s Activity Calories 41 C Average Speed 6.2 mph Max Speed 9.1 mph Average Heart Rate 99 bpm Max Heart Rate 113 bpm This, from today, was Tentative Test Roll, my first time on skates since the fateful crash. It wasn't *good*. It wasn't long. And my back is still not ready for a real skating workout, but it's a start. I am planning to do another one Saturday but I think a couple more weeks to gain the strength and flexibility to skate for real. Last edited by ese002; January 1st, 2020 at 04:57 AM.
