Default Orbit Skate Center - Illinois

Just curious if any members skate here, my wife and I will be in the area for our 10th Anniversary and plan to skate Friday the 21st from 7-9 and then head to Lou Malnati's in Elk Grove.

Default Not yet but...

I had a woman recommend this place to me. I'm North of the border so haven't had a chance to get here yet. How was it?

It was hands down the nicest, cleanest and best rink I have ever skated. I would say definitely do yourself a favor and check it out, my Wicked Scott's performed amazingly fast as all hell and gripped darn good also.

yah, so I finally made it there on Wednesday. I get halfway through
the session and find out they'll be open for less than a month

It looks spectacular. There aren't many wooden rinks of that size left. It's a shame to hear another rink's going to close, but the commercial reality always takes precedence.

Sigh! Skating needs a rich, eccentric benefactor.

I wonder If they’ll give the incoming business tax breaks to establish there? There should be a tax break for established busineses that are turning a profit otherwise. Or are the local governments themselves now for profit entities.

The issue in Cook County (Chicago is in Cook Co.) is that retirement benefits
for municipal employees has NEVER been fully funded. Over the last several
years, the costs of paying out benefits to retirees has skyrocketed due to
the benefits INCLUDING medical expenses. So the situation has always been
a "kick the can down the road" deal.

As for what's actually happening to the facility, from what I've been lead to
understand:
1) it is going to become an ice skating rink
2) the new owners intend on leaving all of Orbit's artwork on the walls
(don't know about the lighting however...)
3) the actual floor, that's the wood, is being sold and moved to Mundelein

What makes an ice rink more profitable than a roller rink and therefore
able to afford the high tax rate? Hockey! Orbit is regulation size it was so
huge! And the facility can be rented out to private parties of varying age
groups and organizations at rates which will be profitable for the new
business. There's real money involved in ice hockey in the upper midwest.

As for that floor... it's a mystery at this point in time. I'm crossing my
fingers for a new roller rink in Mundelein at some point in the future. If so,
I can't imagine it opening for at least two years. The move is not
unprecedented as where I live in Wisconsin, I go to Rollaero in Cudahy
which has a floor (and ceiling arches) which were scavenged from the
closing of a roller rink on the south side of Milwaukee called The Palomar.
This basically happened before my time skating and I am relying on the
intel and memories of skaters older than I who I speak with most Thursday
mornings.

Default What a waste

That floor looks too expensive to just grind into mulch
