*** The SkateLog Forum Has Been Replaced by SkateDebate Dot Com ***

This announcement is to let everyone know that after hosting the SkateLog Forum and its predecessors for nearly 20 years, I have decided it is time to permanently turn the forum over to a new owner and administrator. I cannot think of anyone more suitable to take on that role than my SkateLog forum co-host, Florida skater Jessica Wright. I am pleased to announce that Jessica has agreed to establish and host a brand new skating forum, configured like the SkateLog Forum, but with a new name and a new Web Site. This new forum is 100% owned and operated by Jessica.

NEW FORUM NAME: SkateDebate Forum

Default Newb from Michigan

Just wanted to say hello, I have just decided to learn to skate at the young age of 48. My wife grew up skating and working at a rink till it closed, but hadn't skated since we married (couldn't tell). We are starting our youngest 6 y/o out as well. Wish me luck.

Have fun! I learned at 45, after signing my kids up for Kids Skate Free at our local rink. My then-four-year-old son wouldn't get up if he fell down, so I had to learn to skate so I could pick him back up. Now, seven years later, I love skating much more than they do.

Take it easy, wear protective gear, be patient with yourself, and enjoy it.

Welcome and good luck!

I echo the comment about protective gear, Not many people at my rink use all the pads I do (wrist, elbow, knee) but as I like to try different things (the whole point of learning I suppose) I fall over quite a bit, and the padding definitely helps!

Hi and welcome. Let us know your progress. Inlines or quads? Got your own skates? Rentals? Any goals? We're here to help.

I am skating on quads, they are an older pair of carrera's that were a craigslist find $20, that I remounted the plates on them as the rivets were loose, then swapped out the bearings and wheels. For now there OK, and for what a total of $150 skate pretty nice. I seem to have one occasional truck issue guessing it is something wore odd in the nylon cup area. If I continue to roll I want to upgrade as my foot is a bit wide and occasionally there is some discomfort. But for now they work.

I just wish there was a larger skate pro shop near me as I would love to be able to try on some boots for comfort before spending a few hundred on them. I have an odd foot that is tuff on shoes.

I want to get good enough to skate backwards and smooth out crossovers both ways.
Thanks everyone for the welcome.
