Reidell 395 Boots
Doc, a friend has a pair of 395 boots with a problem, and asked me to look at them.
The left boot doesn't have any side supports sewn into it. Whereas the right boot has a side support sewn into the right side, but no support on the left side. The support on the right side is causing pain to the skater. It seems to me these boots were not properly constructed. Either three three of the reinforcement pieces are missing: two from the left skate, and one from the right skate, or the reinforcement on the right skate doesn't belong there. My plan is to make a slit in the lining to remove the problematic piece. I hope I properly explained the problem.

I've answered my own question. The part I'm talking about is the heat moldable quarter: The Riedell Model 395 Boot Features:
Hand-sorted full-grain leather upper Full-grain Chinook leather / CambrelleŽ linings HF-5 heat moldable outside quarter right boot Nylon snug tie Stitched and cemented leather outsoles What do you think about removing it?

Heat Moldable Quarter
The moldable quarter is found only on the right skate because most skating is done counter clockwise, thus exerting the most pressure while pushing.
The moldable quarter is glued into the boot. Reidell will remove all or just a part of it for you. Also, Reidell told me my friends boot was likely never properly heat molded. I agree, as all she did was put the boot in the oven, but I'm sure she didn't know what she was doing. As per Reidell: using a hair dryer, heat the quarter until it softens. Put the boot on and lace as tightly as possible. Repeat as necessary until desired result is obtained.
