lol I know, right.

Pulled the bearings to see what they were, Japanese KYK`s in really good condition. No complaints, $5 for bearings lol

Just about any pair of reasonable skates are a good buy for $5

Still can get the parts for the Super X. Upgrade with Harry's studs and urethane cushions and sell 'em for a big profit.

Absolutely. I use a pair of super X outdoors with super cushions. Good handling, durable plate. Parts are readily available. Same trucks as they use in all the low-end S-G plates including ROCK.
Those wheels look like they would be quite happy on pavement.

Great score for $5. Skate 'em like you stole 'em, because you pretty much did.

Yeah, I pretty much knew what I had especially when I seen the Rollos. This is more of an eye opener for those that DON`T go to thrift stores. You never know what ya may luck up upon. I`ve made several BMX and MTB scores at this same store but this is the 1st skate score, as small as it may be, that I`ve had so far.

Great buy baby! Although I think you would have paid $5 just to find out what kind of bearings those were. You are always curious - I love that about you!

Just the boots are worth good coin, if they're in good condition

Holly, these boots are immaculate!!! Just not sure of the size. I put them on and skated around the house last night lol. I wear a Riedell 10/10.5 and these were a tad tight, not bad but just a little tight.

We wear almost the same size....maybe I can just fill the holes and use them as hunting boots (yes, I just said that) That is wrong in so many ways. I think it's lack of sleep effecting my brain

Wait a sec, you want to use these as hunting boots but needed brain bleach when I mentioned fishnets? lol

I've seen evidence that the Super X existed by the early 1970s, if not the mid-1960s. The look on the oldest ones I've seen was a tiny bit different, but still a solid cast plate in the T shape with ~10 kingpin and bell stoppers. These are probably not the oldest, as they've got precision bearings.

Going by the wheels and Sure-Grip with Hyde, I'd speculate these were probably an 80s rink pro shop build. Distributor build would've more likely have been Riedell/Sure-Grip or Hyde/Chicago/Ware Bros.

Biggest downside with Hyde boots is figuring out their size. Generally eBay sellers either have no idea what size they are or they say it's some half-size. I tend to read that as the former group got theirs the way you did (yard/rummage sale or thrift store) and that the latter were the former owners. Most Hyde boots that aren't NOS had their size stamps (roundabout where Riedell puts it) worn off ages ago. Hyde seems to have had a greater tendency to go with manmade soles than Riedell.

As far as I can tell, Chicago, Hyde and Ware Bros were the same company. I don't know if they started out that way. I've seen a metal strap-on skate that had Ware Bros on the skate and Chicago on the wheels. Which suggests that perhaps Chicago wasn't originally the company name, but rather the place of origin (which it originally was).

Their earlier skate gear was about as varied in specs/quality as Sure-Grip's was. I don't believe they focused on splitting the retail-skates-for-little-kids with Roller Derby until the late 90s or so. Their earlier stuff was sold through rink pro shops. Funny thing is that the pro Roller Derby skaters were said to be using "Official Roller Derby" skates, but they usually skated on Hydes with Chicago Jet SA45 NTS plates. They had a big name in figure skating on their Betty Lytle boots. One of the earliest examples of "skater's name as brand."

Main reason almost nobody cares about vintage Chicago plates nowadays is probably the lack of parts availability. They didn't seem to keep stuff around for the long haul like Sure-Grip did.
