So last night I asked my coach about the 3x110 with a 1x100 (high/low) she loves it for outdoors but not indoors.

What she said was that she could not get over on the edge the way she wanted for indoor, but that was not an issue for outdoor.

I'm still thinking about it.

At the moment I'm thinking that when i order my custom vapors, I will do so with the idea that I want a Hilo, but start out with a regular 4x100.

so apparently (as with everything on here) there is mixed opinion on this also. Others have said good for indoor, not for outdoor - presumably due to rotation as outdoor skaters are rotating/replacing much more often?

Well, I've obviously been researching bigger skates and would like to take advantage for my park skating.

I think I would be totally happy if I could find a 4x100 I really liked. Problem is, I'm picky and cant find a boot/frame/wheel combo I like. I'm open to buying in the 110mm line and putting 100mm wheels on it for a while (possibly permanently).

I love the Rollerblade Tempest 110 boot with 2 ratchet straps (or the 100 with ratchet at top, velcro at 45deg. But it's 3n1. If they made a 4x100 I'd be all over it

K2 Radical is a 4x100, but has velcro top strap I'm not crazy about.

Obviously not going to a racing boot, so that leaves out the high end stuff. And Im pretty sure it's not worth $$ to get some kind of RB boot with 4x frame?

Any suggestions/recommendations?

I currently use the semi race, which has a boot that is a little higher then a racing boot. I think they were @400$

Being me and skating stuff, I did not care how much the skates were, I wanted to try them, and skate.

I knew that as soon as I started skating every team practice, I was going to *need* custom boots, but that is how I roll.

It all depends on what works for the individual. As a 48 year old woman, who competes both indoors and outdoors, a 4x110 setup is too much for me. But I have no problems indoors or out pushing a 3x110/1x100 setup or getting on edges. No problems with wheel rotation either. I progressed up over time from a 4x100 to a 2x100/2x110 setup and then to the 3&1. Most of the women I know competing in my age range are on a 3&1 setup. A few last year at Indoor Nationals were on a 4x105. I only know of one woman in the "older" ladies age groups who skates on a 4x110 setup, she's on a Bont 3 point boot though, and she skates on that outdoors. Indoors last year at Nationals, she put 105s on her frames.

I understand the men here often prefer a straight 4 wheels setup, but for some people, and women, and hilos let you get the advantage of the better roll and added speed of the bigger wheels, and keeping the frame size length managable. I am planning to try a 4x105 setup for indoors, but the primary problem with the 105s is the wheel availability (others here, like kufman, have pointed out that the 105s are made on a 100mm hub, which some say is problematic...). I will still plan to use the 3&1 outdoors regardless though.

As for a skate setup, I would take Katy's suggestion and look at the Bont Semi-race. I have a feeling that if you go the fitness/speedness type skate, within a short period of time you'll be wanting to move towards a real speed setup. The Semi-race will be the best of both worlds.

I took a look at the semi-race (and the Alpha) after reading these posts, but I really don't think my form will allow my ankles to handle such a low boot. I wind up getting too far onto the outside edge a couple times every time out, and I feel like my supportive boot helps save me.

I really like the Rollerblade Tempest boot (style, not crazy about the color)....I just want a 4x frame, not a HiLo.

This may be correctable with the adjustments that are available on speed type setups. You have the ability to move the boot side to side in order to get the blade where you want it. I have noticed that many non-adjustable skates are in fact built very inconsistently. The left boot may be centered and the right may be way to the inside or outside. This is one of the things that intrigued me back in 1997 when I bought my first set of speed skates. My generic skates were very asymmetrical and so were my indoor quads. Not a problem on speed boots and even some of the slalom boots.

That is a valid point Kuf, the larger skates do have the adjustable frame and that may help. Getting better form and balance would help even more! lol

What I really want to do is order a K2 Radical and a RB Tempest - swap the frames and send back the K2 boot/RB frame....think I could get away with that??

I guess I should just wait till next year, when this year's stuff goes on sale. By then maybe I'll even be good enough to get a Bont set up

KMA, (sorry for thread jacking) just be sure not to get a traditional 3 point set up if you want to switch between 4X and 3/1. The HiLo will not interchange with the 4X. It needs a boot just for the HiLo. I figure you know that already, so sorry if it's a no brainer, just figured better to mention it than not.
