Default Joey Mantia on switching over to ice

Joey was in Holland to give some inline clinics for dutch ice speed skaters and talked to skating.nl about his goal to win olympic medals on the ice in Sochi in 2014. Interesting stuff!

Schaatsen.nl-video on Joey Mantia 4:50

Long track honestly fits him way better then short track will.

Definitely long track. We'll see how he turns out. Probably like a Chad, average technique but just really freaking strong.

I reckon he'll be much better than Chad, only because he's got the biggest set of guns ever. I don't want to make a debate, we'll wait and see but its just my guess he has been developing his body for a long time to leading up to his ice career. He has shown more leg power than leg speed this last couple of world titles.

Not that I know either of them closely, but having talked to them both he's a much better technician than Chad - will serve him well on the ice. If he gets his technique dialed in even remotely well though, as you say... he's a monster and he'll be very very fast.

Hey Rich, when you say "guns" are you referring to his arms or legs?

Because "guns" usually means arms. Just clarifying before someone else does.

I think the correct term for speed skater legs is 'cannons'

I come from a Body Building background. Can't really remember what we called legs.

Usually if someone had big legs he was a "quad monster"

The biggest legs I have seen on a skater is Guiseppi Cruciani

Now those are big mothers, lol

I have high hopes for super-Mantia on ice. I think he's gonna rock! Definitely wishing him the best of luck!

And he was on national television overhere as well. Shows more of him on the ice and a couple of Dutch speed skaters (brothers Ronald en Michel Mulder) comment on him. A rough translation of what is being said:

"Physically I think he has great possibilities and he will reach high in skating if he can get his technique right."

"I've seen his first meters and the way he moves his hips is not yet like it's supposed to be in ice skating. That he will have to work on a bit."

What he does with his hips?

"It's actually a little like dancing."

I don't know much, only that it's a wooden track originally from the United States on which Chad Hedrick supposedly used to train.

I found some more info on website for construction workers. Goole translate comes up with this:

"The wooden track is located in an inflatable hallway just behind the ice rink Thialf. The second hand property comes from the U.S. Texas, has a length of 60 meters and 30 meters wide. The inflatable hall was manufactured by Polyned in Steenwijk (similar halls can be found on their website). Van der Wiel BV Drachten leveled the ground with a hardened layer of pumice. On top is a sand bed with a double layer construction film, which must reverse rising damp. On rows of tiles are 16 meters long beams on which the impregnated wooden platform rests."

didn't she say it was only his 3rd time on ice...? I've seen this guys clinic and some have done it, I think he has the time he needs to train and really be a force in the Olympics. Don't know if that translates into gold but he has the heart to go for it...one thing for sure this is a good boost for getting inlines into the Olympics, and a lot of people will be watching hoping he wins, and I will be one of them.
His technique is superior, his strength is awe inspiring.

I think though switching from inline indoor, which he mostly does, he needs to work on his stamina. But he is a competitor and he loves to win. I have never seen anyone so comfortable on inline skates either, he puts them on and it's as if they become an extension of his feet like no other person I have seen. much like a really good quad jam skater, he dances and goofs off, does tricks, it's funny to watch.

The "kid" is only 24..he has the right maturity level, he really has the experience, which is big, being comfortable out on that ice when they introduce you in Russian...has got to be mind-blowing. But he has been in those types of situations a million times...I think as a community of skaters many of us know that nervous feeling, and many of us will be feeling it with him in that moment, and when the gun goes off, none of the arguments on this site will matter for about 10000 meters...we will all be saying Go Joey, GO!

The crowd has come out in force to watch this race, perhaps the public prefer this look.................His quads (not the ones on his feet) would bust out of most skinsuits.
