It was a moron encouraging his child to stop on the darkened floor to try to play in the moving lights. This from the adult parent that should be thinking about the safety of his child. However I have a bigger problem with the floor guards moronic actions when they saw this happen, they did nothing about it.

Otherwise it was a good session to skate even though the music left much to be desired. It is unfortunate that basically I must try to tune out the music and concentrate on skating. It could be so much more enjoyable if we had better skating music. I am tired of the lame excuse that they must play what the kids want to hear 100% of the time. Remember our discussion at the rink. A three hour session equals 180 minutes, 10% of that is 18 minutes and at 3 minutes per song that equals 6 songs. In three hours that would equal 2 songs per hour. So management is telling us that 2 good songs for skating in an hour will drive too many of their customers away from the rink. I find that very hard to believe.

I wonder if the music at the Toledo rink is better? I just hate their management...but...it is a slightly bigger rink. Maybe we should try that one next week if we go? They have different hours, though. Their Saturday session is 1 PM - 6 PM, $6 and they do have a printable coupon for $2 off...we wouldn't have to stay the whole time.

I can't wait to get back from Portland, maybe we can hit the Findlay rink June 11th, too? It'll give the hubby more time to sleep after working all night.

The music is just SO annoying anymore...and Natalie refuses to budge on that. Though she is nicer than the manager at the rink here, if this rink plays better music, I think a change might be in order. Last few times I was at Ohio Skate Toledo, they actually put out a little "request sheet"...and they did play most of the songs on the sheet. *now wondering if they still do that, too* THAT'S what Ohio Skate Maumee needs! At the Toledo rink, it's nothing more than a couple of sheets of blank paper on a clipboard with a pen tied to it. Not like it's expensive. Heck, I'd supply Natalie with the paper, pen and string! *wonders how hard it would be to drive a nail into brick* Alternatively, I guess we could just duct tape a clipboard next to the sound booth...

"Natalie, I didn't do it, I swear!" LOL

Default Good Night at Moonlight

Well, I ended up going to Moonlight after all. A skate buddy said he would give me hell if I did not show up, so I did. No drama, so hopefully, water under the bridge. My Invader/Bonts finally got tuned up right and the tight floor was a blast. Curvey guys doing their thing, art guys doing their thing as openings in traffic presented themselves, fast guys prowling the perimeter, and the JB crowd in the middle. A lively good night. Good hard night at Fountain Valley the night before. First night on the blue/yellow cushions was nice. Even better at Moonlight with the tight floor. The music was better tonight too. I didn't shut the place down. I pooped out with about 15 minutes to go. That's ok. Like I said, had a good hard night Sunday night. So 2 good nights of skating. And still no zombies. So the first 2 days of life at 50 were pretty good, lol.

Our rink has a Sunday morning adult session from 10am-noon. It works out for me to be able to attend this session only once a year! Because this rink is about 13 miles away in my car and I go to evening sessions, I was determined to ride my bicycle to the rink, mostly via the lovely bike trails here in the Twin Cities. The route would be 11.2 miles. Very doable! I sent my skates home Tuesday night with my skate partner so he could bring them for me Sunday morning and I would not have to lug them in a backpack.

I started out about 8:30 am and as soon as I got about 4 miles into the ride and crossed the Mississippi River it started to rain lightly. I brought a poncho along. It continued to rain the entire time. But got to the gas station by the rink at 9:35 so I had time to strip off my pants and dry what had gotten wet, wipe the mud off my legs, and fluff my hair from helmet hair!!

Had a fun time skating. Then went to lunch with my skate partner and four other skaters. My skate partner put my bike in the back of his pickup. After lunch, he thought I should not ride home as the rain was picking up, so he drove me home. It's a good thing too, because after he dropped me off at home and got back to where I probably would have been getting on a trail, that's when the tornado was going through! The rink is in St. Louis Park and there was a touch down on the suburbs of St. Louis Park! Yikes. You've probably seen what the tornado made of North Minneapolis. A few skaters lived in the vicinity but their homes were not damaged.

Anyway, Tuesday is here and Tuesday Girl can't wait for tonight!

Default Thursday 02Jun2011 Skateland Adult Skate

Hi ALL,

Well tonight was fun as always with mostly good forever_wear skaters.

In the Middle: We had our two young guys still working and practicing jam and funky stuff using all wheel edges. We also had Matthew doing some of that sliding foot shuffle and then some modified break dance moves. Matthew who owns a business doing bath type stuff told me where I could get a bath hold bar for my surround bath tub. A few others joined in and at the end a young gal (known for years) was having a hard time redoing jam moves she did winning at Jam Skate. Ernie did some of his spins, plus more

New: We had one new young black girl who lives now in Boston's South Shore. Hopefully I and we told her about some InLine Skating around Boston, including upcoming Skate Boston, and some rink skating at Chez Vous closer to her abode. http://www.skate-boston.net/

Fast Outside: Snow Bird George is back from Florida and joined us on the outside for Rythmn skating, as did Ernie who again came back this week. Sadly pjmariner wasn't at this session, so yes I and others missed him.

Changed my bearings at skating back to Bones Swiss and immediately felt the difference in easy speed. I did bring my Bones Speed Cream (Oil) to add one tiny drop more to each bearing. Falling too seemed to be easier since even on the rug I could feel slide out.

Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave

Edit-01: A little more about how a re-lubed bearing can feel even on a rug.
Edit-02(05Jun): Snow Bird retired George also skates down in Florida in the Winter (maybe Orlando area) and also does Karate (Taekwondo) or some such martial art
Edit-03(07Jun): Fixed date in Title

I was wondering when George would be back, right in time for summer. I was not planning on missing the session but family first and we had some stuff come up so that is how it goes. I also have a big toe issue on my right foot so a few more days off is proabaly a good thing.

I went to Chez vous to fart around for an hour, figured I would skate 10-11. I get there right as Kenny shows up, he had the exact same scenario, couldn't make Skateland so decided to skate a little at chez vous. Well, they are having a private party there today, so they shut down early to change the sound system, so I skate for about 15 minutes, only good thing was it was free, and my toe will get some more rest.

Hi ALL,

Well I missed a few posts of my skating adventures with good skaters, yet HEY it happens. Besides skaters get bored which includes me.

Well tonight, a Derby practice night, was a better than average attendance for this time of the year. One young thin gal (20s) who is easily fast is bringing some guys along to learn skating. I chased her a few times since she is so nice as a young lady and quite fast. She got contacts so she looks different and is bringing along her two or three young men quite fine.

I will be missing our 19June Art Performance, yet the Art Instructor was nice about me missing it due to family stuff down in Pennsylvania.

This week those Skate Mate carts were OK. Last week a few good InLine young kids were using them as weapons (OK just fun stuff). Now I liked skating with those young kids a lot, YET still a negative on those 'Skate Mates' independent of liking the young good skaters.

Default Busy Odd Night at Moonlight

I had a hard night skating at Fountain Valley last night, but decided to skate Moonlight monday anyway. Wow, it was crowded. One fairly large group, about 14 people, and a bunch of non regulars. The oddness came from an art skater. I realized that I had seen her before when some of her friends arrived, and I saw who she was hanging with. I had seen her before. She had stayed for a little bit a couple of times some months ago. I remembered her because she impressed me. Great skating body. Not thin or thick, good quads, hamstrings, glutes, beautiful push off, good posture and arm position. The kind of skater you could just WATCH. But, she was being a real goof. Cutting things way too close way too often, and going fast. I always worry a bit about fast art skaters vs fast speed skaters, and even more about YOUNG fast skaters of either type. They like to put on their displays of speed, but do not exercise good judgement. Now she had my attention in a bad way. She also kept talking to the floor guard a lot. Like she was complaining about something.

I found out that folks had been complaining about her since before I got there. Now it was time for fast backward. She managed to stop and talk to the floor guard 3 times during the fast skate. It was a crowded fast backward skate. Too crowded for her speed, and she seemed frustrated about it and went to complain to the floor guard. (I am guessing here, but her body language and expression suggested to me complaining) Now, there were a few backward skaters as fast as she, but they were not pushing it. It was just too crowded. Then as I was rounding a corner looking over my right shoulder, I saw her leg up, and the skater next to her go down. A guy probably 50 something. He got up slowly. I thought she kicked him. (others confirmed she did) And she kept going like nothing happened. She came my way a few times, and I immediately did some hard cuts so as to tell her, come this way and I will cut YOU down. She wisely gave me a wide berth. I am too old, crochity, and injury prone to go down because some foolish youngster wants to skate stupid. A pretty mellow regular got in her face after the fast skate and told her to watch her azz, or she was going down. (she defiantly buzzed that guy afterwards too.) She was still out of control for a few songs after the fast skate, but then she finally settled down. Then when things cleared up enough for her to have SAFELY pushed things, she was not out on the floor.

So, nutcase art skater with an overdeveloped sense of entitlement to do whatever she wanted on the skate floor, or just a gal having a bad day? Whatever the case, it made for some drama at the rink.

Hi Don

I miss the old crew too, but we must remember that Wed. is actually a family night. What we are really missing is a shuffle night to help draw the old crew back. Maybe we both need to spend more time in Cherry Hill with Tom. Just a thought!

Hi ALL,

Well tonight was fun so I will post.

I had two younger black guys skating tonight that were good on their footwork and speed. All those videos we watch and they could be on any one of them. The One I know for a long time that comes with some social group I gave him some sweat papers at the end of the session. He is doing great and getting more endurance than when we first met and I tired him out by chasing him.

I hope the other guy comes back since he will be fun.

My one Hispanic Guy with his friends hasn't been back in awhile, Dang!!
He was starting to get good.

Pretty much lost all the other newer session adults, which is normal.

I have a few others that have become regulars, are on an improvement pathway, and we will see if they keep coming or fade. The one mom I can tell used to do Artistic as a young thing.

Derby Gals with a few guys filtered in for practice and my one long term Derby Gal friend chit chatted for a bit, OK two.

Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave

I am horrible off the line, but I have good endurance, so the longer the race the better I do. I am sure this is too a point. No more then 10 laps

My next practice is outside

Skating Dave

I use to skate at Roll On America back in the 80s in Lancaster Mass. I loved that place, I went 4 or more times week. I moved to NJ and had about a 25 year break.

I am older now and can't do half of what I use to do. Sometimes I think my poor health just has me too nervous when I get out on the floor.

I shore do miss that place

This past Tuesday, there were a bunch of amateurs and they kept skating terribly in the fast lane! Ugh so frustrating. You'd think they figure out that the people going lightning fast stay on the right. But no. I don't go around them, I stay hard right and push them when needed. It's the only way they will learn. I've had to jump on the carpet many, many times to avoid a crash.

Tuesday was awesome, though. The DJ was hittin it, and the amateurs usually leave by 9:30, leaving us a blissful hour of 'regulars only'. No falling and everyone can go as fast as they want. Priceless.
Are you speaking of Skate World off Linda Vista? That's where I learned to skate at back in 07. Huge floor which I loved. And at the time really good music. Nice seeing Derby Dolls events every now and again.
