Default Looking for skates

Been out of skating for 25 years. Never really thought I would go back to it. But recently lost around 100 lbs. an now I think I wanna skate again for exercise. Sold/gave away my skates 20 years ago. Now looking for good quality used Mens skates size 12. Prolly speed skates. But would consider others.

It really depends on your budget.

There are basically 4 levels:

1. Walmart/Target skates. $40-$80

2. Plastic trucks with padded boots $140-$200 for complete set (recommended to switch out the cushions)

3. Competitive. $200 plate and around $300 boot with $60-$150 wheels

4. Elite. Same boot but $400+ for the plate and custom options for the wheels.

These are a good place to start:

Thumbs up First off, welcome to the forum and welcome back to skating.

I just returned to it about a year ago after a 20+ yr hiatus myself. Austin pretty much summed it up. Ebay is a great place to find skates, if you're patient. Craigslist/Letgo/Offerup is another place to find local deals on good skates, but those will be very few and far between. I will warn you now-it's a bit of an addiction. In the year I've been back at it, I have bought over 10 different pairs of skates, in an effort to find what works for me.

Default You can get in deep fast!

Depending on how you skate, Money spent is not everything or the end of the hunt. Just because it costs a lot doesn't mean it is the best for you either. I too went through 5 pair in the first 6 months. Had to change strategy, find something that can be tailored to how I like to skate. Not the prettiest or trendy skates but they work well for me. You will spend money on wheels....

Glad it is not just me.

If you get everything right on the first try then cost is not so bad. But you will want solid advise, especially on wheels.

If it were me, I'd go with the 3rd/last ones as the 2nd ones, though very nice are beyond my price range. 3rd ones (Vanillas) have leather soles too. I know nothing about Trak Atak wheels.

Wow, tough size to find, globbed these from ebay, but they all seem to be leather boots, even high tops work, don't tie the laces all the way up, and if the heels are to high, chop some off, new boots are foam and glue and melt, a pair of leather soccer shoes with the cleats removed would work, be comfortable and allow your own plate, any plate to be mounted, but no heel, I prefr a half heel, rentals are (I imagine) a full heel.
