Speaking of the ER, I have seen two broken wrists in two weekends at the rink. A kid fell and broke his and an older woman came in to skate with a group and fell, broke her wrist too. No body wearing wrist guards. I have taken some hard hits in the last few years to my wrists, a couple that would have definitely broken them. Its pretty bad when you avoid running over some one only to hit the wall or floor very hard, hard enough that even with guards your arm near the wrist are sore for days. Love my guards.

Back in my speed team days, our coach actually made us practice falling. He told us, "I'm gonna teach you to fall without hurting yourselves, even if it kills you!". LOLOL! He taught us to fall without using hands, tucking and rolling onto our sides, chin tucked and arms beside head to protect that. Since I have gotten back to skating, that ingrained behavior has saved my wrists on at least 2 occasions, and likely more than that, as I have taken a few hard spills in the last year or so. Dang kids don't look, just leap.

Not many people wear them locally, but I won't go without. I know I should "fall better", but my natural reaction is hands down.
