Default Shabba is Good, Thanks for the Skate Music

Hi Shabba, Brikkee, , , , , , , All,

Haven't been here in awhile ON-PURpose due to Kathie's lackluster forum manager performance. And even more so due to another life crisis (called local government) that is sucking up gobs of time. Life challenges are a bummer. Thank goodness for skating.

Thanks Shabba for the Music. I love skating music.

Yeah I'm a fan of Orbital as well, Halcyon I kinda got burned out on, the Hackers Soundtrack had it and my roommate would play it on repeat.. Over and over and over and over and I can't get that rhythm out of my hear..

I like the Orbital Remix of Satan/Bon Jovie/Debi Gibson thats on the live version though.

Speaking of The Prodigy, from earlier, there is a CD out there called "Tales from the Dustbin Vol 1." Which is AWESOME..

Its the DJ (who really is the only actual bandmember) of The Prodigy, doing a mixtape type remix of about 30 of his favorite old skool songs.

This thread is a stroll- or should that be roll- down memory lane...

I was a DJ "back in the day" and worked at a skating rink, in a lot of clubs and even did mobile stuff between the late 70's and early 90's. As varied as the list of songs in this thread has been, I've probably played just about all of them at one time or another.

I lived through the disco days, the new wave explosion, the hair-metal age and the punk rock revolution...and still love 'em all!

As impossible as it might be to pick just one song to skate to, if you made me choose it would probably be "Flashlight" by Parliament- but make it the 12" so I could have a good long skate!

Just to throw out a few other personal favorites and oddball picks...

"Backstrokin'" by Fatback
"I'm Ready" by Kano
"Holy Ghost" by The Bar-Kays
"The Funk-O-Nots" by The Ohio Players
"A Real Mother For Ya" by Johnny "Guitar" Watson
"Slide" by Slave

Being a rink DJ from the age of 16 you hit the music on the nose. You don't have to think about the beat for any of those songs you just skate.

also in the last post they listed DJ LAZ music that is true miami bass. He had his last B-day party at the rink I skate at, but I am more of the old school fatback, sugarhill gang and planet patrol.

figured i'd try this again since some more "back in the day" folks have posted, 'cause it's still driving me crazy (and i might as well take some folks with me).

my brain i mentioned earlier, "go for it". does anyone remember that? it started with just a big beat and someone counting off the song, and the only lyrics was a computer type voice that kept repeating "you've got to go for it", interspersed with a big horn section. i think it was a jazz artist that put out an r&b type album in the late 70's-early 80's and now that i'm thinking about the old skating days, it's the first thing that pops into my head. it's driving me crazy trying to figure out who it was. i'd like to look for it on cd.

I racked my brain on this one too and came up with...nothing. It always bugs the heck out of me when there's an old song I can't identify.

From the "jazz artist" angle, Herbie Hancock had a song caled "Go For It", buts it's nothing like what you describe. It's a fast (probably about 130 beats per minute) disco kind of song with lots of lyrics.

Is there any other song that this one sounds similar to, either in beat, instrumentation or style? Any other little kernel of a clue that might help figure it out?

ok, i'm trying to listen to it in my head and thinking if a dj mixed it in with something beatwise, maybe "trans europe express", or "rapper dapper snapper" (which is one i think i finally figured out. edwin birdsong).
