Smile My First Regionals Competition?

After 40 years away from the sport I decided to come out of retirement...lol!

I was laid off from work and decided to spend my time skating.

I decided to give it my all and I ended up skating in my first regional’s after 40 years away from competition?

I have to admit the competition was long, sometimes boring and many times fascinating. I had fun.

Since nobody skates at my age, I automatically qualified for nationals. So, in a month I will go to Nationals and give it my all and evaluate my first year back and decide what I will do next year.

So many choices and so little time…LOL! Time passes so quickly so enjoy it while you can and don’t forget to “smell the roses” along the way...lol!

Sincerely,

Larry O...I had fun and look forward to going to Nationals. I have never been there.

P.S. Our Dance and Figure Club even won the High Point Dance Trophy. That was truly amazing since we only have about 15 skaters competing at Regional’s ? But many skaters compete in up to 4 dance events each and many won in those dance events skated. I was so truly amazed and happy at the same time! I think Bob was too? I can always say I was part of that trophy because I got third in my dance event...lol!

Way to go good buddy! All the best for continued success. What is your main ride these days? Oh, and where were regionals held? My friend placed first in class 'B' regionals, NW.

Smile Thank you very much Skate84luv,

I still have the wheels you sold me. Just haven’t gotten around to using them yet, but I think they would of worked at our SW Pacific Regionals that was held in Fresno, Ca.

This was the last year. Next year the SW Pacific Regionals will be held in Sacramento, Ca at the Citrus Heights Roller skating rink.
I heard a rumor they were trying to sell the portable regional floor for 20K?????

What is your main ride these days?

I don’t drive my hot rod anymore. It needs work and my skating has been taking up all my time. I skate 7 days a week for the last year and I have 30 days to get ready for Nationals.

My friend placed first in class 'B' regionals, NW.

That is wonderful Skate84luv. We have many skaters who placed and won in Class “B” dance events at regionals…Solo and Team. I’m sure they will meet up with your friend at Nationals. Best of luck to him or her.

Sincerely,

Larry Otani

Smile Thanks Rick for asking.

I only skated Dance and Figures. Someday in the future I might skate singles. But for now I have decided to concentrate on Dance and Figures.

Since I was the only one skating figures I won...lol! In dance there were only 3 and I got third, but I did beat my friend in one dance. He beat me in the second dance and in the last dance he only beat me by one ordinal point, so it was a close competition.

I was happy to get third with my best effort. Off to nationals to get killed by those boys. But I wanted to get the experience of skating against the best.

Sincerely,
Larry Otani

Smile Thanks everybody for the encouragement.

Jim, I would not be envious. If you were skating you would probably skate better than me. I only wish when I was younger I could of won like you did in singles. I never accomplished that goal. Maybe in the future I can????

Skate84luv as for my 8 wheel ride, it has not changed. Skating on the Roll-line Dance Plate and EDEA Flamenco Dance boot for Dance Competition and skating on the Roll-line “Ring” Plate and EDEA Flamenco Dance Boot for figures. Neither the Dance skate setup or the Figure skate setup are ideal. I’m not happy with my boots in either case.

SP Teri was at the SW Pacific Regionals and I bought a pair “Silver Star” boots for Dance and was advised to go to the Pro Teri for figures. Those will probably be the boots I use next year and possibly going to the Roll-line Giotto plate for figures.

Derrick thanks for the words of encouragement. My goal is to make it into finals and that is probably unrealistic. I was lucky nobody entered Regional competition, but really the boys at Nationals are the very best and I qualified for this game by default. I will do my best! It’s an honor to go.

Sincerely,

Larry O

Don provided me a video of my event. There were only 3 boys and 1 girl and the girl is judged in her own class.

I skated 3rd. Lawrence/Larry Otani

Veterean class is for skaters 50 -65 years of age.

Actually I go to sleep at night with the words "we found love right where we are"...lol!

Going back 50 years or longer takes you into the 50's, where my pro won "Novice Dance and Singles" In the sixties many of the skaters were hanging up their skates and had placed at nationals. My era in the early 70's only one team qualified for nationals and they got 13th. Some 40 years later I plop on my skates and head for regionals. I head for a destination only dreamed about a 1/2 century earlier. Many have come and gone, but the words "we found love right where we are", ring brightly in my future.

I would like to skate singles to this song before I'm gone.

Cheers to all those on a "sentimental journey"...lol!

Larry O and good luck to you...keep on skating.

You could always skate Creative Solo in addition to Freestyle.
