Default Gene Kelly's Skates

I've always wondered about the skates Gene Kelly wore in this movie, (It's Always Fair Weather). Man is he great! And notice the sign on the building in the beginning of the video when he emerges from the rink. Talk about cheap skating prices.

After carefully watching this again, I can definitely see what looks like ankle straps. He must have been wearing the same type of clamp-on skates I wore as a kid. If so, it makes his ability even more astonishing.

Default Donald O'Connor

Donald was just as good as Gene. In this film clip, the strap on skates seem to be precision quality. Were there such animals? https://youtu.be/oGlaPXQyfyM?t=112
