Default What do you DO when a Sucky to You Song is Played

Hi ALL,

I really can not remember all those bad songs across varieties I don't like. I do know them when they are played including a few speed skate songs. I mean even in speed skating, there are some great songs and other skaters have posted them on one of my Starts (Original Posts)

Now a story: At Skateland in Bradford MA when I was a weekly regular we had on some sucky songs in various stints. I mean just boring, and other skaters came up to me and said what the heck is Marc doing, these are terrible. Now Marc is a good DJ, we have all learned, so why was the question. Then a young lady (40s) and a good skater came up to me and said "These songs are great" " I skated them in my youth" Thank goodness I didn't tell her what I and others thought of those songs.

To extend Derrick's post I thought OK

What I do when really bad music is played is that I do stuff in the center floor area. I do backwards crosses, I do the Art Circles, and I do other stuff. Basically I go Non_Music hoping the music that excites me returns.

Many skaters I skate with now, and one great center floor dancer tell me I just have to get on my Ear Buds for those days of bad music. And I am working their suggestion.

What do YOU Do When the Rink Music is BAD/UnSkateable to YOU

I go to the middle and try to spin. Yes, I pretend the song isn't playing. I hate ear buds.

Usually go out to the extreme far edge (along the wall) and try some new footwork, or try crossing over the wrong way. If it's a REALLY light crowd, I'll practice going backwards.

Just before the san jose rink closed the manager started to play hard core Punk in a sub type of punk known as verbal abuse there was a song known as I Hate You, which gets screamed for 3 minets one of the moms skating figured what was being said and started to laugh. / cry. It annoyed her that she paid money to hear that crap. Music like that did not make the rink closure any less painless. Needless to say that manager was gone before the rink closed.

Default Crying cause the RInk was closing maybe??

Glad to see you posting SanJose Bill,
Hope you have a place to skate.

BTW, for the Posters on this tread by Derrick, I don't really wish I remembered skate music that I dislike or strive to find the title. I go in the other direction finding songs and tunes I like so I can request them. I like the kids and 80s skaters skating their heart out. I totally ignore the bad tunes I hear when skating and when they are played. I have a bunch every session. Now if I was young not '66' I would probably know the name of bad tunes, cause that would be part of my youthful experience.

Pretty Sad,

Now unless you know for sure, and she knows for sure, I want you to think of another possibility. She was crying not because of the horrid music. She was crying because the rink was closing. Pretty sad bill, and I hate to lose an Art Skater skating in a rink.

She like most us may have learned, that we can tolerate a lot of CRAP, including lousy managers, and music. YET we like our InDoor places and we like our OutDoorPlaces that we use for skating. We manage the rest in various ways. I strive to improve my skate places, before that my bike places, whereas others do different.

Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave

Default Teens running the Music/DJ Booth

Hi Again

RollOnAmerican Wednesday 15Apr2015 after US Taxes of 1409$ paid.

Lots of not really great skate songs tonight. This young lady reminds me of Zack and a few other DJs across the USA, that skaters have noticed that the DJ's play the music 'They Like' and sometimes they play it several times. Like every 4th song in my case.

They think they own the Boom Box, and we should listen to their selections.

Now that violin song with that young lady on various landscapes is OK, yet 3 times. Marc__n a former DJ and actually quite good when younger used to play the one Frozen Song 3-5 times a night. He just loved it. Now you can listen to it, yet it is not exactly skateable.

Anyway My Point

When rinks hire young teens, or adults as DJs, THEY should manage them. The Crowd on the floor is your customer. You the Teen DJ are not supposed to be the Boom Box Master/Mistress. o - o Most Rinks FAIL HOrrid in this regard.

I mean if you have regulars, play for them. If Hispanics show up in numbers play some stuff for them. If you got slow Rappers well then find some songs they like and MIX them in.

Yours in Skating, MA/NY Skating Dave

Default Tough One to Skate

Hi

OK, I think this is a Going non Music Skate song. With the tempo in this song, I do not know if you can hit even the middle beats and get a skate beat. Sometimes on bad songs you can pick up a middle tempo.

And as a Speed Song it sucks.

I don't think it would be the worst song ever because it would end good, but
the other day I heard Donna Fargo singing "The Happiest Girl in the Whole USA." and I envisioned the DJ playing that first verse and have it immediately go into Flo Rida's "I now what you came here to do...." G.D.F.R.!

I think the rink would get a kick out of that smash up.

Some fast, some speed, some slow, some rap, some all over the place. Yet if it has a beat, idea, or tempo, or a follow me skater I will skate it.

Recently I disliked one of the Frozen ones. Heard it too too many times. Just how many times can you hear a girl crying or chanting a gal uplifting song without a great beat. I don't mind sappy yet I do have my limits. Compare Frozen to https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Obhsql25Hc4 I like this Happy Birthday by Mickey and Donald better because it makes you bounce.

Anyway I love skating to music, rink music not ear buds. Each song quite often gives another opportunity to skate in a different way. Or to skate with ideas in your head and skate to a different beat or style. When good it makes you vary your presentation.

SO Cats in Cradle, although kind of sucky for fast forward can be skated well and with spirit.

If you let the emotions flow the song skates OK to good. I do understand the words in this song from personal experience before me and with my own sons. So it has meaning for me as a skater.

Even Amazing Grace can be skated well. You just have to modify how you skate and skate to the song like an artist.

Which brings me to this current popular violin song by some nice looking talented ladies. Who would ever guess this song could grow on you and you could see the magic. After a long search I can not find the song I see played regularly. Yet this is the jist of the music.

Edit-01 You can even skate this song changing your style, and going fast in places.

Yes I prefer some eclectic music as well. Soft 70s would make a great night. But I'm afraid I would be skating it by myself.

OK this may get me banned in some rinks, but I hate the cha-cha slide & the cupid shuffle. I get it, they're fun group participation songs, but sorry I just don't like 'em!

Actually, I'd love to skate a very wide variety. I'd even like to try Big Band, I think, "Minnie the Moocher" would make an interesting skate. Nice changes of tempo and all drunken swirly at spots.

Don't get me worng, I like pop as well, even bubblegum pop. But lets change it up sometimes.

I'm afraid I'll just have to skate them in the kitchen.
