I have both a Royal and a DA45 XK4 with identical cushions, and the Royal feels more responsive and the XK4 feel a little more stable. Both will turn like the dickens.

+1 on the Reactor/Proline. If you want a lot of turny goodness, those plates might not be what you are looking for.

Or you could get Doc to build you one of these, it also turns like the dickens and is very, very light weight.

I personally love the plate, it's a real winner on a light boot with plastic wheels. I like it more than my Magnum and they've both got the same wheelbase, but re-mounting my Magnum further back could change that. Still absolutely LOVE them, great plate for the price!

I'm skating the same plate/boot combo and LOVE it. Doc picked my cushions for me, but I think they are all soft. Very responsive, light, and comfortable. I know the skins are already recommended for smaller, lighter skaters, but Doc told me that the skins pair particularly well with the Bont boots because the stiff carbon fiber sole lends additional rigidity and support to the plate. If you're looking for light weight, I think this is an exceptional option for derby.

I don't know about the proline, but I've skated the Reactor and I don't think it's a good plate for derby. The action sucks, it just doesn't turn well. There are much better and cheaper options out there with a good balance of responsiveness and weight. As others have already suggested, I think the DA45 or XK4 would be great for you.

8 Ball: It is! I need to play with the heat molding a little more, I see what your wife meant by the counter eating the ankle, I need to bring that hot spot out just a little bit more but I should be golden after that.

Crippler: Good to know about the increased stiffness from the boot! I really do love this setup and I TOTALLY agree with you about the Reactor. Maybe not that it's not a great plate for derby, but it certainly doesn't fit my style of skating. I like lots of lateral movement and hard cuts, but my Reactor felt a little bit better doing really hard sprints. I really depends on what you do and how you skate, but I couldn't see myself on another Reactor/Proline any time soon.

I am on and love my Lasers , 9.3 elite on a 10.5 395 ,swiss and 96a 'Scotts'.
I am waiting on a Doc mounted 395/NTS Royal with the lot .
When it arrives I'll post my thoughts .
Ditch the toestops you dont need em ,and knock off another 1/4 inch off your wheelbase .

Typing while blind, I'm afraid. Guilty, your honor.

Yeah, I'd do 9.0 on a 9.5 boot. I'd do it just to get a 9.5 boot.

Cant do it... I use them a LOT.
I tried a blue magnum and it just didn't work for me. The flip axils were sweet tho.

This? It's not a Magnum, it's a Marathon. Built similarly, but 15 degree double action rather than the 45 degree single action of the Magnum.

Magnums came in yellow (aluminum) and white (magnesium).

I stand corrected.... it was 15+ years and many rinks ago.

I may try the just swapping for ultimate trucks and see how I like the weight. Still a little sketchy about damaging the pivot cup.

You won't notice it. The difference is miniscule. Trucks are not a direct swap-in, however it is not difficult to do.

You won't. The plates are a decent grade of nylon, and you won't hurt them. I've put metal trucks on Lasers and Satellites without incident.

Thanks for easing my mind about this. I really love the laser.

No tutorial that I know of. And it's not secret stuff, just fiddly. You have to futz with the distance from the plate to the cushion retainer to get the truck true to the plate. Sometimes it's different jam nuts, sometimes it's shims, sometimes it's both. Sometimes it's cushions. You don't have to do it, but you sacrifice performance. The plate is what gets squirrelly.

Here's one I did a year or so ago using Big Boys and Super Jet trucks. Reversed the kingpin while I was in there.
