Default Are we Scaring New Forum Visitors?

Several forum visitors have complained recently about what they feel is an overly aggressive/attacking/insulting/disrespectful tone in some of the SkateLog Forum posts.

Please tone it down folks, because that kind of thing has caused us to lose forum members in a few cases, and caused new forum visitors to be afraid to make their first post in several other cases.

And please everybody... when you see a conversation starting to get ugly or overheated... you can really help us out by participating in diffusing the situation rather then throwing gasoline on the fire.

I don't know if I qualify as new anymore, but there have definitely been some ugly threads recently. Is there any particular reason they don't just get closed when the nonsense starts? I'm not certain I'd feel comfortable recommending a friend to join and I'd definitely not let my kids on here. Either way, I'm here to learn and I have learned a LOT ugliness aside.

S

PS. Do most people even read this section of the forum?

Right, definitely not... For grownups, it's not really that bad of a place as long as you are accustomed to recognizing and ignoring the jerky people on a forum.

Timeouts seem to work well for particularly obnoxious people.

Default I totally 100% absolutely agree that new arrivals deserve LESS HARSH treatment!

I have also noticed way too much of the the sarcastic tone and talking down to many new arrivals here.

I have also heard about people who only lurk and are too afraid to post, for fear of those demeaning comments with a tone of negative assessment toward them for their lack of knowledge or understanding on some skating issue that concerns them.

This is simply mean spirited and the SLF community at large should come down hard on those members who persist with this kind of behavior.
We should police ourselves to minimize this stuff.

When you feel a thread is getting seriously out of hand you can always send a PM to forum co-administrators "Jessica" and "Kathie Fry". It would also really help us out if - to the extent possible - some of you could try being the voice of calm and reason when a discussion starts taking a seriously downward turn. But that being said, you are always welcome and encouraged to let us know when you see a problem that needs addressing.

I've noticed the "flame wars" in the quad forum recently. I am a new poster myself, just started today, actually, but I've been watching Skatelog for a while.

I expected something like this would happen. I just expected it to happen in the Derby forum (no offense, but that kind of thing is expected when you get several hundred "type A" personalities in the same place).

But...seriously...the Quad Forum? wise elders turning into prima donna's over urethane? "the Scott vs. Craig thread" comes to mind. (For those who didn't read the thread, Aussie Scott and Anabolix didn't start the thread, and when they did eventually post in it, they behaved as gentlemen, unlike certain others who shall remain nameless.)

I'm glad you brought this up, Kathy, but on the whole, from what I've seen, the forum members do a pretty good job of putting the fires out by themselves.

I've noticed DocSk8 will answer the same question over and over and over again. He does a good job of not answering with "Use the search function d**n it!" even though he has every right to. And I'm sure there are many others like him on this forum that are just a little less visable, but together, they represent "the Bible of Skating" that is Skatelogforum, so let's try to keep it clean.

As for being "scared as a new forum visitor," not at all. Though lately I have had to resist the urge to jump into bed, pull the covers over my head and suck my thumb while quivering in terror. Disney movies are getting so violent these days.

I hope I didn't sound self-righteous. That is not my intention at all.

sad we never really had this problem much before. but with more members and others just wanting to create a stir we are exposed to it also. block the member or kick them off.

sometimes i noticed it is between vendors online although the majority of them here are very good.

i still would recommend this forum, its one of the best online. i seen worst things other places.

report it to the forum leaders and let them delete it and hopefully they will send a pm to the member in question to curtail things.

enjoy this forum as i have for years now.

Kudos for trying to keep the peace. I've learned over various forums to avoid feeding the trolls, but it can be very discouraging to folks new to forums.

The fear of falling thread over in the beginning forum comes to mind as quite nasty, and I thank you for stepping in!

As a new member to this forum I'd say it's more helpful than scary.

Pretty much says it right there and like Scruffy somewhat implied a lot is in the quad forum.

One other topic that comes to mind other than the Scott vs Craig thread is the "short plate" vs "long plate" threads where there is always a lot of sarcasm and talking down to people.

But then again, maybe some of these folks need thicker skin.

Randy, we have not ignored your requests to kick others out of the forum but that is not our first course of action when we have a problem. Just FYI, we don't plan to sell the SkateLog Forum. If you want your own forum, just open one, no need to take over ours.

This seems like a good place to point out that the majority of our forum complaints come from people who are also the most complained about. The VAST majority. And those same people are usually first in line to throw gasoline on any flame wars that start smouldering.

I hope that's not directed at me ? because the way this thread looks to the regular reader it makes it look like I'm trouble maker around here

I have never even responded to a thread with the person I have complained about so that's obvious I am not the flame thrower

I will be and sure to never respond to these type of threads again

If the shoe doesn't fit, it's not directed at you.
