Default Sunken rink floor

The two rinks I skate at in Albany, NY have Level entrance and exits. I'm visiting friends in Florida and the two rinks I have been to have sunken rink floors.
This is a new experience and takes getting used to.
The two I have been to are skate reflections in Kissimmee, and Locomo in Spring hill.
Is this a southern thing?

Hi thesavo,

"Sunken Rink Floor"

In my 60+yrs of Skating, I've been to a number of these type floors around the USA.

I don't know that it's a "Southern" thing, as I've seen them elsewhere.

Bottom Line - it's a Dumb-A$$ way of building a Skate Floor. (IMHO)

Safety of Entrance - Exit to the Skate Floor (not to mention most all Skating Styles I've seen having that type of Floor Edge to contend with if one Overshoots) was not in the minds of those who built them. Perhaps they weren't Skaters.

Default Another Problem of Sunken Floors

Most rinks with sunken wooden floors have never given thought to broken plumbing flooding the skate floor. One rink in Michigan lost their floor, they came in the next day to find a large pond in the building where their floor was. The floor was ruined!

Hi Dennis,

Excellent observation. Perhaps then they could turn up the AC and make it into an ICE Rink !

Yet another reason it's a Dumb-A$$ way of building a Skate Floor.

Default Not all rinks are created equal..lol

We visited one not to long ago that had a smooth 10 feet to the entrance then a thick 2 inch tall 4 inch wide speed bump thing then back to the same smooth floor...of course my oldest was not paying attention and imagine hitting a speed bump in a car going 60. She was not permanently injured but she was hurt...

Hi Tislord,

Speed Bump ????

Assuming it wasn't a Flaw in the Floor, (and unrepaired) then that's a new one to me. First I've heard of such a thing.

Some folks do the Damnedest things to Skate Floors.

Safe Skating - not so much.

Hi GraySk8ter,

Yep !! Still Rollin' Hope you are too !

Left Knee injury has curtailed my Full Sit Spins and Camels, but most other stuff still going.

Got New Eyes in Jan. Cataracts Out, New Toric Lens in! Took a bit over 2 mos before I could get Glasses to Read & work with Computers and Video Cams again.
I couldn't Skate for that time either, waiting for the Eyes to heal enough to be safe.

WOW ! Went from 20/600 in both Eyes to 20/25 in Rt Eye & 20/40 in Lt Eye.
Now everything is Clearer, Brighter, Whiter, and more Colorful.

For the first time in my life I can do most everything now without Glasses if I want to, but I still use them to get full 20/20 Vision.

Default sunken floors

I remember going to a all night skate at a rink with a sunken floor. The height difference was about the normal wheel height. At the beginning of the night, everyone leaving the rink remembered to step up. After 4-5 hours of skating in the middle of the night, a number of folks forgot to step up on the way off the floor. It wasn't pretty

At age 82 my Dad had cataract surgery and after having worn thick lenses and ultimately trifocals his entire life, was able to read the numbers on a prescription bottle without glasses the first week and having only one eye operated on.

Glad it went well. In a few weeks I will be getting a partial corneal transplant with cataract removal in my right eye. The left eye will be sometime later in the future. The reason for the transplant is a degenerative disease called Fuch's Distrophy. I'd end up blind later on without the surgery.

Wheely(pun) glad you are mended, rolling, and video taping again.

Keep rollin

After all that Skatin, even if one remembered the Raised Edge, being Tired might make it tough to get those feet up and over it.

It's Great that he came out so well. Even with the Corrective Toric Lenses, I still need glasses to see anything closer than 2', but then I had no clear vision further than my nose for the last 20yrs anyways. I had to use Magnifier Lenses on top of my glasses to see stuff closer than a foot distance.

Thanks ! Aside from Rollin, I'm back to Recording KCRW Roller Derby Video and just finished doing a Wedding for the Daughter of a fellow Skater at the WINNWOOD.

WOW ! That's quite a bit more serious than simple Cataract removal. Best wishes for you on that. I'm guessing your Recovery will be somewhat longer than mine was.
