Default How do I count inline workout calories burned?

Hello,

First post here. I am curious as to how to count the number of calories burned while I'm inline skating. I did find this website
HTML Code:
http://www.caloriesperhour.com/index_burn.php
and wonder if it is even close to accurate.

It seems to me a lot comes into play in this calculation, like wheel diameter, durometer, how good your barrings are, how smooth the surface is, ect...

Is there any accurate source where I can get a realistic idea of my actual calorie burn?

Thanks

The vast array of variables make it a real challenge without some kind of electronic measuring device like a heart rate monitor with calorie function. Your effort level, age, size, gender, and experience skating will all factor into the equation.

Is there any preferred brand/model of heart rate monitor which seems to work well for us inline guys, or will anyone do.

Ideally something that measures miles, heart rate, speed, and calories burned would be nice (although I hate to spend the money, as I just bought a new pair of skates).

for the miles and speed you're going to need some kind of GPS. I have lived without mine for a long time before I got it and a long time since it died by using the USATF mapping system for measuring my routes. If you know your distance and your time, you can at least deduce average speed.

I will have to look at my HRM to tell you the model, but it's a Polar and if you poke around you can find the kind that include calorie counting. I have yet to hear of a Garmin GPS that didnt exagerrate the crap out of calorie counts

My Garmin (205) doesn't have a skating setting. I have used the XC Skiing setting (while XC Skiing) and a few for skating and they are, as Speedy says, grossly inflated. I was able to get good close approximations using Garmin data and my Livestrong App until they changed it. Now it sucks. I find it a chore but worth looking at periodically. I will get the best information I can and track my skating, lifting, plyos, skiing, rest, whatever along with diet and sleep and other stuff... For brief but typical windows. In other words, I haven't seen anything that'll make this easy on you. Bu it is doable.

http://www.lenihan.org/sk8_calories.htm

This chart is what appears to be similar to me and some other skating buddies when we did our own calculations with our weight and heart rates monitors.

My garmin 305 calculations on caloreis are a joke, but my older Polar HRM was inline with the chart and just doing calculations based on heart rate, weight, and time.

How can you have a single chart that doesn't correct for rolling resistance, wind resistance, skating efficiency. But strongly correlates with body mass (incorrectly called 'weight' in the chart)?

I use Endomondo since it is GPS based and gives an approximate value of calories burned. I do not use the heart rate monitor feature but it does have that ability. My problem is I will see 2000 calories burned and figure a dish of ice cream will be fine.

Depends on the size of the bowl...

No - no accuracy I recon. Too many variables to be accurate -- simply ball park.

Just skate until you sweat and skate some more. Be your own judge. Calories dont matter a whole lot...just how you feel. Do you feel like you've had a workout? Do you feel like your staying or getting fit? Those sorts of things we can do without machines. 2 cents.

Yes and no Ph. Some Gyms run hot to make members sweat... Yours is good advice, but only if you know your own limits and norms. Plus, some days just suck. And how do you know what you are doing until you have numbers? My Garmin is my training partner, it is the best invention!! And yes, you are totally right about the volume of variables. I have come to grips with approximations... Tracking and tracking, that has been the key. Everything that goes in your mouth, every conditioning activity (and rest etc.), and the best you can do for what goes in your head. I DO NOT track all the time. In fact I track only a few times a year. But it is critical if you want this data.

Hee hee - and here I am bending over my computer wishing people would disconnect with their gadgets.

I do recognize there is value in 'em though.

Just a guide based on average fitness skater. Of course it's not a science.

Chart doesn't mean anything to a newbie who doesn't really care on caleries as much as how much skin they can keep on their body while flailing around.

Chart doesn't mean anything to the most efficient speedskater who is going to be pushing the envelope whether they burn one or a zillion calories.

It's just a good target for a average fitness skater.

Default polar

In high end polar heart rate monitorst you can pick also skating as a sport profile. so it should count calories properly.

on the other hand, calories are counted with any heart rate monitor, where you can set your max hear rate, weight, height etc...
